Best practices for using cloud data management services

A misconception often linked with migrating to the cloud, is that data can be dumped as is on a cloud service. It is true that keeping your data in the cloud makes it easier to run your business from a variety of aspects, but it is crucially important that the data is managed well. Here are the three things you must do to make sure you are using cloud data management properly:

Start with a plan

You need to know who needs access to what. You should also define which data needs to go to the cloud, and which should stay on-premises. Other similar questions will help you understand how to organize everything. Once this is done, you have to keep a higher data quality. This means that the way you manage data has to be regular and clean. You can’t have duplicates or errors. You must always be certain that the data entry is completely accurate.

Don’t neglect data governance

This allows you to prevent someone accessing data they shouldn’t be accessing. Information should be only accessible by the team you need working on said information. Data governance will make sure permissions are handed only to people who need them. This is a major security concern if not done right, so don’t rush it and don’t skip it.

Do backups

Last but not least, do backups, often. One thing you never want happening is your business losing important files with no backup to go back to. This means that all the work that went into creating those files and making improvements on projects goes to waste, and you start from scratch. Depending on how many things change on a daily basis, you can go for anything from an hourly backup, to a weekly backup. Make a note of how much work (in hours) you’re okay with losing if something goes awry, and use that as your backup interval.
